Partizan May 2007

What a great day out and for so many reasons. I'll try and explain as I detail the photographs but essentially the games were good (if not downright fantastic) and the atmosphere and people were warm and friendly. My thanks to the organisers for an excellent show.

Of course the day got off to a terrific start for me and my son when we joined in the Bluebears "Ride of the Thunderchiefs" game. If you've ever played in one of these you'll know what I mean about fun, and if you haven't put it on your list of things to do because it is forty minutes well spent. Neil is a great host & a font of knowledge about things aerial, Phil is also an excellent host and good fun to be around, unfortunately Kevin wasn't there this year. Still my son beat me by shooting down two Migs - I'll just claim to be historically accurate by being unable to achieve any hits in my F104!

Morris & Jones put on an excellent "Back of Beyond" game. It grabbed me because of the vehicles, guns and planes in use (and of course I forgot to take any photos of the planes - DOH!) - all should feature in our Great War games later this year.

The Forest Outlaws put on a Seven Years game mostly with Front Rank figures but some of the excellent redoubt FIW range included (the only range to get the right size musket to figure I think). One gentleman did take it to the max of course.

Like a Stonewall Wargames Club had a very nice French Wars of Religion game - Coutras. Again nice figures and nicely presented (despite the glaring industrial lights).

Occult Wars put on a 40mm "Night of The Living Dead" game. George A Romero would have been proud of them. Great figures, great terrain and great fun (very popular with the kids - who I hope have never seen the movie since it is an 18 certificate!!).

South East Scotland Wargames Club put on one of the best games of the show. Their Space 1889 game was well put together (ever spent ten minutes looking at a game and saying to yourself "that's an old clock and that's a lego bionicle top and that's a ..."). the game looked great fun and was very tempting for me to start yet another "period".

The Perrys dispaly game was of a Samurai siege. Not really my thing but the scenery was terrific, as always, and I was particulalry taken by the trenches and river sections.

The League of Augsberg came along with a Great Northern War game. Now having admired these figures on their website for so long it was a real pleasure to see them "in the flesh". there were just so many little things to admire like the planking over the water in the trenches, the water amongst the cavalry bases, the camp, the dugouts. I could go on and on but well done to these guys because I could have drooled over this game all day long.

But there was something even more enticing. I've saved the best to last.

Yes it's Mollwitz by the Wargamers.

What more do I need to say other than many thanks to Henry, Phil, John & steve for organising it and allowing me the opportunity to see it and to meet Stuart Asquiith & Charles Grant. What a joy.

And yes that is one of the props I took a photograph - it's been so long since I saw a cannister cone! I didn't take photographs of the bounce sticks, burst circles and other paraphenalia that Henry had made - sorry.
Jason (see his blog link) took a lot more photographs which I'm sure will be appearing soon).

Wow! I'm envious. That looks and sounds like it was a great gaming experience. Wish I could have been there.

Hi Paul,

Those are some terrific photographs of the Mollwitz refight. And how nice to see some THE Charles Grant's famous Spencer Smith units and buildings in color after all these years. They seem to have weathered the years well. What a blast it must have beeen to meet Charles Grant Jr. and Stuart Asquith too. Terribly envious! Thanks for posting so many photos.

Best Regards,

Stokes

Great write up GM!

Is that an armoured train I spy at the 'back of the beyond' game?

I'm almost sick with envy over those lovely pictures of the Mollwitz game.

There's just an indefinable *something* that those nice, simply and brightly-painted figures have en masse.

WOW!

Sure wish I could have been there. Thanks so much for the photos of Mollwitz. It has reconfirmed that I am going in the right direction with my SYW project.
