Update on the English Civil War Project

Quite a lot of progress since the last time I actually posted anything connected with wargaming.
In the hope of keeping some semblance of order in my painting I decided to get as much of the Scottish army completed before I got fed up painting grey. It also helped that my local model shop (D Hewins Models in Grimsby) had a fair stock of boxes and, surprisingly, my wife seemed to if not exactly encourage a bulk purchase did not put up any obstacles either (I was happy to buy one box but walked away with five!).

First, I've completed two units of foot. Forty figures each with sixteen pike and officers along with twenty four muskets.

The boxes are Warlord games and come with four metal figures - two officers, a piper and an ensign - along with alternative metal head wear for converting the pike and shot into Scots.

I also purchased and have completed a small unit of firelocks, again from Warlord games. Plenty of movement in these figures compared to the foote although I'm not sure about the drummer who looks like he's about to take a tumble a over t.

All the foot units so far have been based on 40mm square mdf bases from Warbases (www.warbases.co.uk) who have an excellent service and provide a good product. These are then modelled with black tile grout dipped into fine sand. Washed with burnt umber and then dry brushed with various browns and creams before having static grass added. As a final touch I also put on some Highland tufts to give a Scottish feel.

And now I'm two thirds of the way through my first unit of horse. Eight figures completed from twelve. Again from Warlord games and this time they come with three metal riders to provide some alternative to the standard horse figure. I've not started these alternatives yet - tomorrow for that treat - but they come festooned with looted baggage. Also in the box are extra pistols to be stuffed down boots or into coats, belts and anywhere else you can put a twelve inch barrel!

So that leaves three more boxes of horse and two more of foot in the big blue box. And of course it's "The Other Partizan" next week!!

Home from warmer climes

I'm sorry for the long gap between postings here but firstly work has had me tied up and stressed out. Secondly I've just got back (at 3am this morning actually) from a well deserved and most welcome ten days in Lanzarote.

Ten days of doing nothing other than trying to look dignified attempting to get on an inflatable in the pool.

Snorkeling with the fishes in the big blue.

Or just lying around the pool, reading, drinking and sleeping.

Weather was okay. Unusually for the island we had a lot of cloud during the morning which cleared by lunch and then sunshine. This being my second visit to the island we had no need to go on trips and so just relaxed and let the world go by (as is our norm we had no TV, no newspapers, no radio - in fact the world could have gone to hell in a handcart and I would not have noticed)..

Reading material was nothing too deep:

Tim Severin's trilogy "Viking". I had read the first tow before but bought the omnibus edition and read all three in one go. As holiday reading it was fair, no great deal of swash buckling more a series of fortunate incidents strung together to allow the lead to be at all the significant events between 1000 & 1066.

Followed that with Dan Snow "Death or Victory the Battle for Quebec". A good history of the campaign and one that does not flinch from revealing the flaws in some of our greatest heroes.
So now it's back to reality and on with the painting - Vikings , French Indian Wars ..............?
