Victory of the Veterans

The almost complete Persian army took to the tabletop last night against Marks considerably older Macedonian army (we reckoned that his army of Minifigs is at least 35 years old against mine of a few months).
The Persian army deployed for battle. Medium & light cavalry to the fore, then the Greeks, Persian foot with a division of light cavalry in the extreme background.

The medium cavalry did have a regiment (the only complete one so far) of heavy cavalry in support (Old Glory figures finished last weekend).

The Medium cavalry were particularly in awe of the enemy. They failed three consecutive order rolls to move forward!

The light cavalry by contrast were eager to be off and were soon harassing the enemy and driving them back in confusion under a hail of arrows and javelins.

Naturally being a rather more disciplined force the Greeks recovered from this onslaught and promptly dispersed the Persians despite being outnumbered 4:1.

Worse was to follow as in a subsequent move the Greeks caught the Persians napping and the Persian commander was unable to get any orders to his troops.

In the center the Persian foot were equally unwilling and let themselves be pinned on their battle line. Despite firing showers of arrows into the advancing Macedonians they failed to stop them. The resulting clash of arms saw the Macedonian phalanxes drive the Persian foot from the field.

Alexander meanwhile had routed the entire Persian left flank and was already beginning to collapse the center left flank when the phalangites broke through. (Sorry no photograph of that piece of the action - battery empty).

The end result was that despite their numbers the Persians were, in the end, easily overwhelmed by the Macedonians.

And my thoughts on the rules?

Just like "Black Powder" the secret I feel is in giving the troops the right mix of abilities. This is something that both Mark & I need to work on so that the Macedonian army has more ability in enduring the hits, break tests and morale saves.

We (I?) need to remember the bonuses and deductions for firing and fighting as well and this may have prevented the Companion cavalry from suffering like they did, probably the only contentious part of the whole game.

Overall I enjoyed the game and am looking forward to a rematch in two weeks time.

Beautiful looking game ... superb table ... what's the rectangular thing in the 5th picture???

Love your army of course, but don't those Minifgs look good... what a scale difference though!

the rectangular thing is one of the "drop in" inserts we use. It can be, as shown, some flat scenery or a walled enclosure, bunkers, a wadi, an oasis. Lift and replace for a flexible board.

Both armies look great, but I have a sentimental place in my heart for those older minifigs. I bought some used Republican Romans off a friend and repainted them back in 1981 and still have them! (he was irritated that once I repainted them they looked so much better.)

Lovely looking game! Also very impressed that you've got your Persians completed so quickly.
